Having the right shoes for your workout is SUPER important to protect you feet, and sensitive joints such as knees and ankles. Experts say you should change your workout shoes every 6 months, or 300 miles of running. Although this can get expensive…. it is very important to make sure you protect your feet with shoes that provide the support you need to workout safe and effectively.
Invest in a good pair of shoes, designed for the type of workout you are doing. Running shoes support the foot differently than a shoe designed for cross training or lateral movement. Also, depending on your foot itself and whether you have high arches or flat feet you may more or less support in certain areas. Another thing to consider is adding extra support with an athletic shoe insert.

If you have no idea where to start, go to an athletic shoe store, talk to a sales person and try on different ones until you find the pair that works best for you. Most sales associates at stores like Finish Line or Foot Locker are very knowledgeable about different brands, and can help you pick out the perfect shoe for your activities and foot type. Some shoe stores such as Finish Line offer a 15 day running trial where you can buy the shoe, take it home, and try it out – if you do not like the way it feels you can bring it back and exchange it for another shoe.
If cost is an issue, try the Nike outlet or Nordstrom rack to find high quality shoes at a reduced price. Also, newer shoe models and colors tend to cost more, so opt for last year’s shoe for a high performance sneaker at a discount.
