5 Best Shape-Up Tips for 2016

Resolutions are tricky…but 2016 is time to change your mindset, get a fresh start and be your BEST SELF.

Today we are starting the FREE SummerGirl Fitness 60-day fitness challenge. We have 2 months to make BIG changes…no matter what your goals are, we are going to work hard to reach them together.

If you have not signed up yet click HERE to get your FREE Challenge Packet complete with a healthy grocery list, 6 steps to success, a workout calendar and measurements and goals sheets.

Here are my top tips for shaping up in the new year:

1.Change Your Focus

Instead of focusing on the aesthetic changes you want to see and criticizing your body for how it looks – emphasize the physical changes you FEEL and the amazing things your body can do. Realizing that you can run for 3 miles, or hold a plank for a minute takes the focus OFF looks and onto health in a positive way.

2. Resistance Training is Key

Everyone thinks cardio = weight loss…but this equation is not the whole story. Yes cardio burns calories, but muscle holds your metabolism and is essential for burning fat, looking lean and being strong. Make it a goal to strength train 3 times a week – and make this a focus of your New Year’s training!

3. Set Specific and Measurable Goals

Vague, unrealistic or overreaching goals are a recipe for disaster in the new year. Make goals that are specific and can be measured. “I want to lose weight” is a vague goal that is hard to know if you have reached. Instead, create a goal such as “I want to lose 10 pounds in 2 months” which is specific, manageable and measurable.

4. Do What You Love

Today there are so many workouts to choose from, there is NO NEED to do something you hate. If you hate to run – that is fine! There are so many other ways to get fit. Try Zumba, or Kickboxing or Barre – experiment with Youtube videos and different programs, but if you find a workout you love you will be much more likely to stick with it all year long.

5. Stay POSITIVE and be Patient with Yourself

Rome was not built in a day, and weight loss and healthy changes take time. Stay positive and focus on building your body up both psychically and mentally. If you slip up one day or miss a workout…do not lose heart, but remember that every day and every meal is a chance to get it right and have success.

Hope these top Shape-Up tips will help you along your healthy journey this year! If you have any questions about the Fitness Challenge, leave them below for SummerGirl Fitness.
