When trying to lose weight there are some weight-loss rules that should be hard and fast in your weekly routine. If you want the scale to go down – hold on to these 5 essential tips to see success with your diet and weight loss goals.

1. Always Eat Breakfast

You’ve heard it said that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and this is definitely true. Eating something first thing in the morning is a great way to jump start your metabolism and keep it running strong all day long. Choose something with protein and fiber to keep you full longer and satisfied throughout the day.

2. Do Something Active Every Day

While working out every day may be a little too ambitious when you are just starting out, an important rule of thumb to have for your whole life is to do SOMETHING active every day. This does not have to be a fitness class or crazy workout, but even a walk with friends, or evening stroll with your dog is a good way to stay moving. Even on your rest day make sure to get 10,000 steps in to keep your body active.

3. Drink 3-4L of Water a Day

One of the essential ingredients to a fast metabolism is water…and drinking enough of it! Often in the winter months we can forget to hydrate adequately, and this can cause our metabolism to slow. Be sure to drink 3-4L of water per day, and keep your metabolism in check. Hydration is also so important for healthy skin, hair, and nails.

4. Portion Control Matters

Even when you are eating healthy foods, it is still impotent to monitor portion size. Remember that healthy foods does not mean all you can eat – calories in need to be less than calories out if you want to lose weight. Eat to fuel your body, and eat just enough to give you energy without over filling your plate.

5. Live by the 80/20 Rule

None of us can eat perfectly healthy all the time, but we can all eat health 80% of the time. If you dedicate to eating healthy 80% of the time, and really work to emphasize vegetables, lean meats, fruits and healthy fats in your diet along with an active lifestyle – you can have a few treats here and there without having to worry. None of us have to give up champagne completely…thank goodness for that! : )
